En 1872 , degas viajó con su hermano rené a nueva orleans , Luisiana , para visitar a su tío , michel musson . Después de su partida en 1873 regreso a francia se retrasó , decidió pintar para pasar el tiempo , y pretendía que esta pintura se vendiera a un comerciante textil británico . Pero , un descenso mundial en los precios del algodón hizo imposible realizar la venta. , y en su lugar exhibió el trabajo en la exposición impresionista en parís en 1876 . En 1878 fue comprado por el museo de bellas artes , convirtiéndolo en la primera venta de uno de Degas’ trabaja para un museo .
